03 · Guide

Read an economic calendar in 3 steps

  1. Watch high-impact releases

These releases can move gold and the US dollar within minutes. If you are new, follow this group only.

  2. Compare actual with forecast

Price reacts to the gap between the actual figure and the forecast, not to whether the number looks good or bad. Markets react to surprises.

  3. Prepare before the release

Spreads often widen at release time and price can whip both ways. Check your stop loss before the release, or stay out if you have no plan.

6 releases that matter most

  • NFPUS jobs, usually the first Friday
  • CPIUS inflation, usually mid-month
  • FOMCFed rate decision, 8 times a year
  • GDPUS growth, quarterly, end of month
  • PCEThe Fed's preferred inflation gauge, end of month
  • PMIManufacturing and services health, early month

Frequently asked questions

tht26 mascot thinking
What time is NFP released in GMT?

NFP comes out at 8:30 a.m. New York time, usually on the first Friday of the month. That is 12:30 GMT when the US is on summer time, and 13:30 GMT when the US is on winter time (early November to mid-March).

Why do US release times change during the year?

The US moves its clocks forward on the second Sunday of March and back on the first Sunday of November. GMT never changes, so during US winter, US data comes out one hour later in GMT. In 2026 the US moved back on November 1; in 2027 it moves forward on March 14.

What time does the Fed announce rates in GMT?

The Fed meets 8 times a year on a published schedule. The decision comes out at 2:00 p.m. Washington time: 18:00 GMT when the US is on summer time, and 19:00 GMT when the US is on winter time.

What does "actual better than forecast" mean?

The released figure beat what the market expected. The calendar shows it in green; a weaker figure shows in red. The colour tells you which way the data surprised, not which way price will move.

Should I trade right at the release?

At release time, spreads often widen and price can whip both ways within seconds, so orders can fill at a worse price than you set. If you have no plan for that release, staying out is a decision too.
